Question of the Week
Q: What has been your biggest challenge in writing or publishing these books?
A: I find plenty of this work challenging, but I think my very biggest obstacle comes down to time management. I am not a fast writer by any means. I find I can get more books out by having at least three books in different phases of production: one in plot/outline, one I am writing the first draft of, and one I am editing. This lets me release at least 3-4 books a year. Then there is the marketing, blogging, etc. I never have enough hours in the day.

DeleteVery early on, you were cranking out books it seemed like one a month...and while I loved it, I was concerned you were going to burn out. I was perversely glad when you slowed down.
ReplyDeleteIn one of your early books (forgive me, I have a hard time recalling adults' names and titles of books)...you r female lead had debilitating pain issues...I knew that was from the heart (heh, one chronic pain person knows another)...another was centered around an autistic child and again, I knew that was from experience...so I was ever more certain you couldn't hold that pace.
Much as I hate Christine Feehan, Lynsay Sands and so many others doling out only one book in series per year (albeit they run a lot of series), I would still rather that than nothing at all because they've burned out/lost their muse.
Keep a pace you are comfortable with and that allows your muse to fly free. And while there are requests going...I can see XXXX's Diary with a different woman, seems like there are dozens of women rescue-ees stuck on Earth after the big bang with stories to tell...in Shalia's Diary format, of course, so I can get my bi-weekly fix :-P
The romance genre is brutal. Publishers demand quick turnaround for a series. Once I went indie, I started taking more time. Now I'm doing some traditionally published work again, and yes...it is tough, schedule-wise. I'm looking forward to a break after I fulfill my contracts early next year. And I've learned a valuable lesson...when starting a new series, write at least the first 2 or 3 books before shopping it to a publisher!
