WIP Wednesday - Clan Beginnings: Clan and Conscience

Urt’s smooth voice was a calm counterpoint to all the muscled brutality present in the room. “What a lovely surprise, Dramok Ospar. What brings you to my office today?”
“I’d heard you had a new mural painted on your ceiling. I do love artwork.” Ospar had heard no such thing, but the scenery, depicting Pladon’s flagship mine on an island in the middle of the peridot sea, was as good an excuse to have a look around the office as any. Ospar wondered what was hidden in the far corner of the room, kept secret by a gem-studded metallic screen.
“Ospar, you are too funny for words. Artwork, indeed. Tell me you’re ready to settle our dispute for Eruz?” Urt settled back in his chair.
Ospar snorted. “Absolutely not. I only came to thank you in person for your lovely gifts.”
“Gifts?” Urt crooked an eyebrow at him, as if he didn’t have a clue what his rival was talking about.
“One delivered at Itga’s platinum mines a few days ago. The other sent to my office only yesterday. For pity’s sake, Urt, can’t you do something classier, subtler, than explosives?”
He didn’t miss how Urt’s gaze shifted to the man on his right before giving Ospar an insulted look. “Mother of All, Ospar, do you really think I’d try to blow you up? I’d far more enjoy the entertainment of seeing you lose this contract. The look on your face will be priceless when I win.”
“I’d hoped that was more your style. One I quite agree with, by the way.”
“Of course you do. We are alike in many ways.”
“Except in our choices of business partners. Your backers have a history of removing competition permanently. It says a lot about a man, the company he keeps.”
Urt stilled. Again, his glance went to the ugly creature standing next to him. Then he glared at Ospar. “My financiers are upright citizens of the Empire. Such allegations hinge on libel, Ospar. Unless you have evidence, you’re asking for trouble.”
Ospar grinned at the Nobek Urt couldn’t seem to help looking to. “And what are you asking for, Urt? It seems to me that a failure to deliver the Eruz Mountain Range might not be looked upon favorably by your…supporters.”
The hobgoblin’s eyes narrowed. He darted a glance at the equally ugly man on Urt’s left. Urt looked at both of them before snickering at Ospar. “I’d have never taken you for a conspiracy theorist. Next thing you know, you’ll be telling me the Lost Tribe is living on a secret colony in the Trag system.”
Ospar was about to respond when the aide sitting outside the open door cried out. A blurred figure raced into the room. Yells rang out in the room, and every Nobek abruptly pointed a blaster at Ospar—and Jol.
His bodyguard was suddenly in front of Ospar, placing himself between the Dramok and Urt. Three more Nobeks dashed into the room, looking furious.
How the hell did he get past Pladon’s security?
Ospar’s thought was a momentary blip in his radar, because bigger issues had arrived with Jol. Surrounded, with almost a dozen blaster barrels pointed at them both, such questions faded into the background.

Question of the Week

Q: Will there be any books mentioning lesbian relationships? I've wondered about Narpok and what her future holds, particularly if she would express interest in joining a clan or choosing other options.

A: If you're asking about a book featuring Narpok specifically, I don't have any in the works. I also don't know if her current relationship with an Earther woman, or anyone else for that matter, will be mentioned in any upcoming books. I like to think Narpok is enjoying her life right now, exploring all her future can be in love and happiness with whomever adds to that. She deserves it.

Thanks for the question!

WIP Wednesday - Clan Beginnings: Clan and Conscience

Ospar ran his fingers from Jol’s chin to the hollow of his throat, discovering the steady pulse there. The guard’s skin was velvet over steel, hot to the touch.
Meanwhile, Jol’s blue-violet eyes watched him with interest—but not enough heat to make Ospar feel he was doing anything for the man. He was supposed to be rewarding Jol, and here he was, tiptoeing around without a clue as to how to do that. It had been far too long since he’d tried to actually seduce someone.
              “By the ancestors,” he groaned.
“What’s wrong? Am I not attractive to you?” Jol’s demeanor remained the same, but the crease between his brows deepened.
“You’re attractive. You’ve got nothing to worry about there.” Was he ever. That might be part of the problem, Ospar realized. The man had to know how delicious he was to look at, to lust after.
              “Something’s wrong.”
Ospar was going to have to fess up. Feeling pathetic, he admitted, “Don’t laugh, but—well, it’s been a while.”
Jol didn’t laugh. “Too much work, not enough recreation?”
“Unfortunately.” Ospar raked his fingers through his hair, feeling frustration on more than one level. “I’ve got so much to prove. Do you know I’m the youngest director of any Kalquorian mining company? Ever?”
Jol combed his fingers through Ospar’s scalp, smoothing out the tangles he’d created. It was an innocent gesture, a platonic one, yet for some reason the consideration enlivened Ospar’s senses. He was abruptly aware of the other man on a more profound level.
The Nobek’s deep voice was soft. “You’re under a lot of pressure. Is that why you’re such a jerk?”
Ospar scowled, but there was hardly any real irritation behind it. Not when Jol treated him like a real person and not a responsibility he had to nursemaid. He complained anyway. “Oh thanks. Nothing like a little seductive patter to get a man in the mood.”
Jol actually smiled at that, his even teeth bright in his dark face. Ospar’s stomach turned heavy to see how the expression elevated the Nobek from merely handsome to striking. A surge of interest filled his cocks, making him hard.
Jol cupped his ass and pulled him close. Judging from the thick iron pressing against Ospar’s belly, he wasn’t the only one feeling the growing heat of the situation. The Dramok’s breathing went ragged as he felt the strength of the other man against his body.
“I think I’m beginning to recall how this works,” he said, his tone thick.
“Yeah?” Jol chuckled. “Then why don’t you shut up for a change and kiss me? Surely you can figure out how to do that much.”

Question of the Week

Q: Are there any clans/Mataras you had trouble writing because you couldn't connect to them as well as the others?

A: That's an interesting question. I actually haven't had any real issues connecting with any of my characters, at least on some level. Every character I've written has some facet of myself in him/her, even if it's only a sliver. I do identify less with younger characters (for example, Clan Bacoj, Cassidy, Clan Dusa) because of their lack of life experience. But I still connected with them and didn't find them difficult to write, reflecting on how I was at that age.

I also do detailed character studies before I write the first word of a story. Character development is a huge chunk of my process, usually taking several days. I end up knowing my gang so well that I really can get into their heads and understand where they're coming from at any given moment.

Thanks for the question!
