WIP Wednesday - CyberServed: Made to Order

(Note: in this future universe, men and women are addressed as "Mr." Don't be confused by the heroine Tosha being called Mr. Cameron by her assistant.)

Tosha's refurbished cyborg shows up for work:

“Mr. Cameron? Something’s going on down the hall. I heard screams.” Amadis’ tone was level, but her expression was tight as she stood in the office’s doorway.

Tosha rose. “Screams?”

“Maybe you should duck in the safe room, just to be sure.” Her assistant glanced at the wall panel that hid the reinforced door to Tosha’s panic area.

“Let me take a peek.” Probably a dumb move, but if Tosha’s employees were in danger because of her, she wanted to know.

She ignored Amadis’ disapproving frown as she hurried through her aide’s office. Both women hovered just inside the doorway that led to the corridor.

No screams, but the usual hum of conversation that took place in the vicinity of lesser executives was louder than usual. Then quiet descended like a curtain. Utter silence.

“Let me look,” Amadis whispered. “Stay back.”

She made an odd motion, swinging her arm out the door. She edged farther out to expose her gray three-quarter shantung silk jacket sleeve and creased pant leg. She kept vital organs out of sight while showing whoever might be heading their way her skin, darker than Tosha’s. She took a risk but gave would-be assailants the chance to realize she wasn’t their target.

Tosha clung to her other arm, listening for shots, ready to jerk Amadis into the office. Her assistant winked.

“So far, so good. Having that look now.”

She leaned out, staring down the hall. Blinked. Her mouth dropped open. Her eyes widened. She whispered. “Saturn, put a ring on it, because I’m done and won. Mr. Cameron, your cyborg’s here.”

Tosha’s heart rate sank to acceptable levels. She chuckled. “Impressive, isn’t he?”

She stepped past Amadis, entering the hall. It was her turn to gawk, as did every employee who ventured from the offices lining the corridor.

The Wall, standing inoperative on the stage of CyberServe’s storage bay, had been a notable sight. Walking towards her, his impossibly huge frame forcing the accompanying Jeff and Beauchamp to follow in his wake rather than at his side…

Overwhelming. Terrifying.

The missing lens had been replaced to give him two brown eyes and hide the orange mechanism. They riveted on Tosha, and she wondered what he thought. Or rather, what his program told him about her. Did cyborgs think anything about their owners, or was it all a cold data stream that identified her as female, five feet-ten, medium build?

“Woof.” Amadis’ expression was far from professional.

“I had no idea you went in for the dangerous look.”

“What can I say? I love them rough and tough and bad man all over.”

The TWM was that, and then some. His features, all solid planes, had been sculpted to instill panic despite a lack of emotion. Perhaps it was that impassive demeanor that made him scarier than he would have been otherwise. Tosha had the notion that when he reached her, he might keep walking, disregarding her as he knocked her down and stomped her flat.

The metal chassis was completely concealed, his bronze skin regrown. He moved with a grace that was odd for his size. He almost slunk, a tiger stalking prey. She shivered.

His size. She didn’t remember him being so big. The tee-shirt covering his massive frame stretched taut. It might as well have been painted on his wide chest, on his ponderous shoulders. The pants weren’t quite as tight, but the shape of his thighs was obvious.

The Wall was aptly named. He was a walking barricade.

Practically running on his shorter legs to keep up, Beauchamp hailed Tosha as they neared. “He’s something else, isn’t he, Mr. Cameron?”

Something else. That was one way of putting it. “You’re the very soul of understatement, Mr. Beauchamp.”

The Wall drew within ten feet of her and stopped. His gaze hadn’t wavered from her face from the moment she’d stepped into view. Disconcerted, Tosha returned his steady regard. They stared at each other for a couple of beats.

He spoke. His voice was deep, almost guttural. She felt it in the marrow of her bones.

“You are Tosha Cameron. I am Model TWM, serial number two-two-one-two-one. I am here to serve you.”

Scheduled to release in April.

She’s marked for death. He’s her only hope. But can a de-commissioned cyborg once programmed to kill humans be trusted with her life…or her heart?

They called him the Wall, part of a cyborg army that terrorized humans during a long war waged by those intent on wielding power. When Tosha Cameron, owner of a multi-billion corporation, first sees the deactivated cyborg, he’s a tattered remnant of a horrific past.

Most would prefer to see cyborgs destroyed, but those with vision see a valuable resource. When Tosha’s business rivals target her for assassination, the Wall—whom she renames Brick—is her best bet for protection.

Reprogrammed, Brick proves he’s more than a mere machine. Programmed to guard Tosha, he can supply her every need. He soon develops beyond his learning matrix and software, becoming capable of humanity…and more.

Dark secrets from a bloody past are waiting deep in his circuitry, however; secrets that could kill the woman he loves and has sworn to protect.

Getting Personal: Writing Stats

How many hours a day or week does a full-time writer do her thing? Well, that depends on the writer. We all have our goals we want to accomplish on any given day. Some authors try to write a page a day. Some reach for a few thousand words, whether it's a first draft or editing.

As a homeschooling mom with a budding theater actor/musician teenage son who needs to get to rehearsals and shows, I have to manage my time with great care. My schedule is mine alone, so you can't take what I do as typical. But here's how it looks for me on any given week:

Actual writing or editing: 17 hours

Research: 4 hours

Managing my social media as a writer: 7 hours

Administrative/Marketing: 6 - 10 hours (depending on how close I am to releasing a book)

It's a job, obviously. Fortunately, it's a job I love.

Do you have a question for me? Leave it in the comments, and I'll try to answer in a future blog.

WIP Wednesday - CyberServed: Made to Order

 A decommissioned cyborg wakes up:

Passcode accepted. System online. Functions within normal parameters. Awaiting sensory calibration. Calibration complete. System ready to respond.

Input: sound.

“Open your eyes, TWM-22121.”

Input: sight.

Brightness. Blinding. Automatic dimming for maximum response enacted.

This unit is located on a raised, round platform. The bright light beamed from overhead. Beyond, a long stretch of a stone-colored podium. Two figures stood behind it.

Living beings detected. Analyze.

Humans. Male. The sentients are smaller than this unit. Matrix identifies Alexander Beauchamp, this unit’s owner. Standby for further orders.

The chamber they stood in felt small despite the darkness hiding whatever was in the room’s further reaches.

Scanning.

Tables. Computer units. Chairs. Tools for adjustments. Tools for repair.

“Say hello, TWM.”

Input: speech.

Subjects’ language identified: ITCS common speech, fourth generation.

“Hello.”

“How are you feeling?”

Input: tactile sensation.

Warning: multiple sites of damage to unit.

Right elbow joint system inoperable.

Right shoulder joint system inoperable.

Right hip joint system compromised; seventy percent operational.

Right torso casing damaged, still within operational parameters.

Multiple outer skin and base covering lacerations, thirty percent of endoskeleton exposed, no operational anomalies occurring as a result.

Unit’s memory grid of operations and orders: zero percent.

Operational programming: baseline for understanding and carrying out simple orders only.

Appropriate response computed.

“I’ve felt better.”

Auditory input: laughter, male on left identified as Alexander Beauchamp. Humor response graded as positive interaction.

“It took a couple of seconds before it answered you. That’s some serious lag.”

Auditory analysis: skeptical tone, male on right. Response graded as negative interaction. Searching files for appropriate response.

Data insufficient for appropriate response. Maintain silence and do not respond.

“It’ll get faster as the matrix comes up to speed. It’s an eighty-two-year-old unit, shut down for thirty of those years. We’ll be boosting the performance ratio as well. In a couple of hours, it’ll answer at a perfect conversational level.”

“Conversation is the least of my worries. Tosha Cameron’s life hangs on how well this thing can protect her.”

“When we have the TWM repaired and upgraded, she’ll be in the best possible hands, Mr. Rourke. You have my word on it.”

“Make sure of that, Mr. Beauchamp. I’ll hold you personally responsible otherwise.”

Auditory analysis: male identified as Rourke issuing threat directive to male identified as Mr. Beauchamp. Graded negative. Searching files for appropriate response.

Data insufficient. No directive exists for answering threats. Maintain silence and do not respond.

Scheduled to release in April.

What I’m Loving – A Grab Bag of Good Stuff

I have opinions, like everyone else. I have a blog that I don’t do enough with beyond talking about my own books. So I’ve decided to post a few opinions on miscellaneous items that have won my recent interest (even though little here is new). Maybe you’ll find some good stuff you didn’t know about.

Book

It makes sense an author would talk about the books she finds fab. I just finished Sleeping Beauties by Stephen King and his son Owen, published back in 2017. If you’ve ever thought the world would fall apart if men were left to fend for themselves in a womanless world, the Kings are in your corner. A little bit horror and a lot of modern fantasy make this a terrific read.

*As a side note, I keep a list of recommended reading on Bookbub’s site. You can see what I’m in love with at https://www.bookbub.com/authors/tracy-st-john.

Music

When I latch onto a band, I become downright obsessed. For the last few months, I’ve been all about the Finnish symphonic metal group Nightwish. Pounding rock framed in orchestral and operatic drama and the greatest female singer alive in their third vocalist Floor Jansen (fight me on this, I dare you)…how have they been around for twenty-five years and I’m just finding out about them? Oh well, better late than never. Highest recommendations for their studio CDs One (with original singer Tarja Turunen), Imaginaerum (with second singer Anette Olzon), and Endless Forms Most Beautiful (with the vocal goddess herself, Floor). Any of their live CDs and videos are well worth checking out. Have a look at a couple of live performances, the epic “Ghost Love Score” and rock anthem “Last Ride of the Day” (links below) and be amazed.

Fun to Follow

Facebook: Every time a post pops up on FB by brothers James or Robert Welsh, I have to stop and watch. James is a skincare expert, and Robert is a fantastic makeup artist. Though they are geared to a more youthful audience than I belong to, they still have great tips for everyone…and are often hilarious, especially when they get together and try bad makeup hacks posted by popular influencers.

Twitter: Well, this one isn't fun. It’s honestly heartbreaking. But one of the most important Twitter accounts out there is https://twitter.com/AuschwitzMuseum. They post the unvarnished history of the infamous concentration camp, along with bios of those who perished there. Well worth the sadness to remember what must never happen again.

On the opposite end of the spectrum come the witty posts of https://twitter.com/JortsTheCat. After recently being CATapulted (sorry, had to do it) into fame because of an AITA post, which you’ll find on Jorts’ pinned tweet, this adorable feline has an ardent following for good reason. He’s insightful, funny, falling into the trash, and currently unbuttered (again, check the pinned tweet thread).

Favorite Indulgence

Handmade boots in the coolest styles. Need I say more? Pricey, but the kicks at Freebird (www.freebirdstores.com) are amazing. My boot collection is already ridiculous, especially for someone who lives waaay down in the sweaty South, and it’s only getting bigger thanks to this site.

What good stuff are you finding out there? Drop your loves in the comments section, kudos for any links available. Unfortunately, I have yet to find out why I can’t post comments myself…Blogger is completely wrecked for me in that regard…but do feel free to converse amongst yourselves. I’ll be reading to find new goodies too.

WIP Wednesday - CyberServed: Made to Order

Our heroine's first impression of a cyborg she might choose for protection:

He was huge, at least six-feet-five and all bulky muscle where it hadn’t been torn off, allowing the metal chassis to show. One lens was missing, showing a baleful orange eye. The other was tawny brown, still intact. His rugged features were brutishly masculine, terrifying.

Tosha was almost afraid to look between the behemoth’s legs, but curiosity won out. It was big, but far from the battering ram she’d half-feared she’d see. Perfect, in fact. Too bad it was attached to such a frightening creature.

“The face of the wars. The Wall is the most recognizable of the cyborgs.” Beauchamp also gawped at it with awe.

“The Wall?”

“The collective nickname for the ground fighting force. This beast is TWM-22121. Imagine a battalion of these guys marching into your city. Fully shielded and armed, programmed to steamroll over any resistance, he could have taken out a dozen human fighters by himself.”

“More,” Jeff muttered.

Tosha sidled close to him. “Are you sure you want to see any cyborg on a daily basis? After all, I’ll be bringing my protection to the office with me.”

“You need the best. If CyberServe has their shit together, and I think they do, a cyborg will be the ticket.” Jeff drew up tall and offered her a reassuring smile. “I’ve dealt with worse circumstances. I can handle looking at these ugly bastards if it means taking care of you.”

“Okay.” If Jeff was certain, then she should be too.

Scheduled to release in April.
