Released from a criminal psychiatric unit on the
planet Kalquor, Joseph Walker starts his life over with the fierce Nobek who
scares and entices him in equal measure. Coming from a society where same-sex
attraction was punished by death, Joseph finds openly loving another man filled
with its share of obstacles. He and Almon are committed to each other, but is
it enough?
Making matters worse, Almon is not the only Kalquorian
enthralled with Joseph. The Earther’s other would-be suitor is determined to go
through Almon to get what he wants. He will stop at nothing to take Joseph from
Almon…even kill.

It's OK for a quick read, but I hate to admit I was a little disappointed. It's not so much that this is a homoerotic novel (because I love the Clan Beginnings series as much as I do the regular Kalquor series) but the fact that the plot is pretty thin and there's not much character development either. There's no background really on Nesof and Joseph's past dealings to explain Nesof's later behavior, or what went on after Joseph went to Kalquor when he was institutionalized, as examples. I miss the great storytelling so many of the other books have. It's also surprising that Joseph and Almon did not formally clan since an earlier book mentioned the clanning laws have changed with Candy and Nobek Stidmun now being able to legally clan.
ReplyDeleteSorry you didn't get much out of the book. As for the clanning situation, the book did cover how male Earther companions did not fall under the changed clanning laws. The new laws addressed only Earther Mataras and their role in Kalquorian society. The situation for males was mentioned as remaining vague and unresolved.
